Rothiemurchus – the Gateway to the Cairngorms – is one of the most important ecosystems in Britain, being home to a remarkable variety of wildlife, including the rare capercaillie, who have lived alongside settlers in the region for thousands of years. At the heart of the estate is one of the largest natural forests in the UK, which offers an almost unending series of gentle walks with outstanding views of the Cairngorms: a place where you really can wander and lose yourself in your thoughts. For the more daring, there are plenty of diversions, from archery and pony trekking to water tubing and paddle boarding on the River Spey.
